When Learning Feels Harder Than It Should

Standardized tests show grades, but they don’t always show why learning feels harder for some students than others. When you or your child learns differently, it’s easy to feel frustrated — wondering why it takes so much more effort while others seem to breeze through. The truth is, everyone learns differently — and that’s okay.

At Westside Psychology & Learning Centre in Port Moody, CB, we offer psychoeducational assessments to help students and families bridge the gap to success.

ABOUT US

Why Work With Westside Psychology & Learning Centre

The late nights spent on projects, the tears shed over math homework at the kitchen table—I've been there.

As a psychologist and a mother of two young children, I understand the heartache of watching a child struggle in school. As parents, we want to do everything we can to help our children stop the narrative that they are not “good enough” or will never reach their goals because they learn differently than others.

With over 15 years of experience as a psychologist, I have been supporting students of all ages, and their families and educators to understand their unique learning styles and pave the way to academic success that works for them. The Westside Psychology & Learning Centre team is comprised of highly skilled clinicians whose mission is to help every individual realize and achieve their potential.

Our approach is simple yet effective: we uncover your unique strengths and weaknesses, provide evidence-based solutions to help you succeed academically, and rediscover the joy of learning. Whether it’s through psychoeducational assessments or personalized interventions, we’re committed to optimizing your performance.

We uncover the strengths and needs and provide personalized solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Assessment Services

Choosing the right psychology practice can feel overwhelming. Here are 3 reasons Westside Psychology & Learning Centre in Port Moody, BS is a great choice for assessment services:

1) Many of our clinicians work in the school setting already. With the intricate knowledge and experience of the special education service delivery and available resources in the schools, we can make more effective recommendations that are easy to implement and are doable in the classrooms.

2) We offer additional check-in points, complementary to our services to you, twelve months after the feedback meeting. We want to be part of your family’s journey to find the help you need.

3) We offer flexible payment plans for pre-approved clients. We recognize that the assessments can be a barrier for students not receiving the support they need. We recognize providing an assessment in a timely manner is crucial in your child’s learning journey and want to help with the burden of costs through a flexible payment plan. Please enquire our office whether your family may be eligible.

Psychoeducational Assessments:

The total cost for a psychoeducational assessment is $3,590, which includes the following:

  • Initial parent intake (1 hour)
  • Assessment sessions with your child (6-7 hours)
  • Parent feedback meeting (1hr)
  • Scoring and report writing time (5-7 hours)

The parent intake and feedback sessions can be billed under a parent’s name (provided they are in attendance), with the remainder of the receipts going under the child’s name, as some extended health plans cover a certain amount for each family member.

Therapy or consultation sessions:

Registered Psychologists- $235 per 50-minute appointment

Full payment is expected on the date of evaluation or consultation, by credit card or e-transfer.

While we do not offer direct billing for our psychological services at this time, we provide you with receipts that you will need to apply to your insurance policy for reimbursement.

You do not require a doctor’s referral. However, some insurance companies may require a doctor’s referral in order to claim health insurance benefits.

There will be 4-5 appointments in total and may take 12-16 weeks total. After the first appointment (intake), there will be 2-3 testing sessions (2-3 hours per session), followed by the final appointment (feedback). All appointments usually take approximately 8-10 weeks to complete. Assessment reports typically take between 4-6 weeks from the time of your final feedback appointment.

Our office requires a 48-hour (2 business days) notice which allows us sufficient time to offer the spot to another family who is in need of our services. In cases where a client misses an appointment or fails to provide 48 hours’ notice, the client will be billed in full at the clinician’s regular rate.

For a psychoeducational assessment, considerable time has been specifically reserved for you and your child.
If you no longer require an assessment, we require at least 2 weeks’ notice to cancel the assessment in its entirety so that those appointment times can be offered to other clients. Assessments cancelled in its entirety without 2 weeks’ notice will be charged a cancellation fee of $500.

Individual assessment appointments cancelled without providing 48 hours’ notice will be charged the hourly rate of $235 for the session time.

If your child is struggling and not realizing his or her potential in school, then you are in the right place. However, if you are still unsure and your child’s difficulties require a mental health assessment, please book a free consult with our registered psychologists to point you to the right direction.

Yes. If parents are separated or divorced, both parents are required to understand the nature of the psychological services and provide consent to proceed if they share joint legal custody/guardianship. If one parent has legal documentation showing the sole decision-making right to make medical decisions for their child, only that parent’s consent is required.
While we leave this to the family’s decision considering their circumstances and needs, it has been our experience that the sooner the students were accurately identified as learners and obtain the necessary documents, the sooner their school experience improved. For some institutions, it has been our experience that a formal diagnosis was required for students to access services.
